September 2026 Notes From Home | NW Burbs Home & Community

A fresh-start home checklist, a smart way to think about recent neighborhood sales, a Northwest Suburbs event, and our first local trivia question.

Hi friends,

Welcome to the very first Notes From Home: NW Burbs Home & Community.

September has always felt a little like a fresh start to me. The light changes. Routines settle back in. We start noticing the projects we meant to get to over the summer.

It’s a reminder that beginnings don’t always have to be big. Sometimes a fresh start is clearing out a drawer, finally fixing the loose hinge, or sitting outside and enjoying your home before the weather turns.

That’s really what I want this monthly note to be about: home, community, and the little things worth knowing along the way.

A Small September Reset

You don’t need to spend an entire weekend getting your house ready for fall.

A quick walk around the house and a few small projects can go a long way.

  • Gutters and downspouts: Make sure they’re clear and directing water away from the house before the heavier leaves arrive.

  • Windows and doors: Look for cracked caulk, gaps, peeling paint, or spots where water or cold air could get in.

  • Window wells: Clear out leaves and debris and check that drainage isn’t blocked.

  • Outdoor lighting: Check bulbs around entrances, walkways, and the garage as the days get shorter.

  • Furnace: If you haven’t scheduled a tune-up yet, September is a good time to do it before the first cold stretch.

  • One small clutter spot: Pick a drawer, shelf, garage corner, or storage area and clear out what you already know you don’t need.

And I’d add one more thing:

Do something simply because it helps you enjoy your home.

Sit on the porch. Light a candle. Bring out the fall blanket. Buy the mums. Make one little corner feel good again.

The goal isn’t a perfect house before October. It’s taking care of a few things now that Future You will be glad you handled.

I went a little deeper on this because fall maintenance can turn into a much longer list than it needs to be. If it’s useful, you can read my full September home checklist here.

Around the NW Burbs: A September Favorite

On Sunday, September 20 from 2–4 PM, the Schaumburg Park District is hosting the ¡Adiós Amigos! Monarch Butterfly Release at the Vera Meineke Nature Center at Spring Valley in Schaumburg.

Visitors can see the butterfly-rearing operation, children can make a butterfly craft, and at 3 PM, the adult monarchs will be released as they begin their migration to Michoacán, Mexico.

The event is free.

This one feels especially perfect for September. What a beautiful way to watch one season become another.

One Thing I Wish More Homeowners Knew About Nearby Sales

You’ve probably heard some version of this:

“The house down the street sold for $500,000, so mine must be worth about the same.”

Sometimes that sale is incredibly useful.

Sometimes it really isn’t.

When I look at recent neighborhood sales, I’m not just comparing square footage and bedroom count. I’m also looking at things like:

  • Condition and updates

  • Floor plan

  • Lot size

  • Garage space

  • Basement finish

  • Location within the neighborhood

  • When the home went under contract

  • What buyers were responding to at that particular time

That last piece matters more than people realize.

Two homes can look fairly similar on paper and still compete very differently once buyers walk through them.

So a nearby sale is usually the beginning of the valuation conversation, not the answer.

You don’t have to be planning a move to understand what’s happening with your home. I think homeowners should have a realistic sense of their property and their neighborhood even when they’re happily staying put.

Think You Know the NW Burbs?

Each month I’ll send a Northwest Suburbs trivia question, and everyone who replies with a guess will be entered into that month’s drawing for a local prize.

Our September question was:

Brandt’s Little Cafe has been a Palatine favorite for many years. What year did Joe and Romelda Brandt open the original restaurant in Palatine?

The September prize was a $25 gift card to Brandt’s of Palatine.

September Trivia Answer

The answer: 1954

We didn’t have a winner for September, but I’m keeping the monthly trivia going. There’ll be another local question and another chance to win in the next issue.

Thanks for being here for the very first issue.

My hope is pretty simple: when Notes From Home shows up each month, you know there will be something useful, something local, and probably something you didn’t know before.

I hope September brings you a good beginning to fall.

Warmly,
Mari
