Frontier Days marked its 50th anniversary July 1 through 5 at Recreation Park, 500 E. Miner Street. The festival has run every year since 1976, entirely on volunteer labor, and this year's five days of entertainment on two stages included Soul Asylum, Rod Tuffcurls & The Bench Press, Yachtley Crew, and a closing set from American English. The 50th annual Fourth of July parade stepped off at 10 a.m. from Dunton and Oakton, one of the largest Independence Day parades in the Northwest Suburbs.

Once Upon a Bagel opened its newest shop at 36 S. Evergreen Ave. by the end of March, its first move into the Northwest Suburbs after decades on the North Shore. The 1,400-square-foot shop is takeout only, which is the useful part for a Saturday morning routine. There's no seating to compete for. You grab your bagels and walk somewhere with grass.
Hugh's Chophouse, two blocks away at 9 N. Vail Ave., is still working toward a summer 2026 opening. It's the second concept from Matt Peota, the Arlington Heights resident behind Passero, and it's planned as a Chicago-style steakhouse and bistro with a 76-seat dining room and 16-seat bar. No outdoor dining is planned for this year's Arlington Alfresco season, so sidewalk tables will have to wait until next summer.
What's Still Ahead on Thursday Nights?
Sounds of Summer, presented by Schwabe Group at Compass Real Estate, is marking its 25th anniversary season this year. Concerts run Thursdays, 7 to 8:30 p.m., in Harmony Park at Vail and Campbell, through Aug. 27. The season opened June 4 with a "Music with the Mayor" set from Jim Tinaglia's own band, Exit 147, and has moved through tribute acts covering Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, and ABBA.
One heads-up: the July 16 show was cancelled due to unsafe air quality from Canadian wildfire smoke, so it's worth a quick check of the Village site before any Thursday if conditions look questionable. Still ahead this season: Petty Union on July 23, a boy band tribute July 30, The Chicago Experience on Aug. 6, Motown Nation on Aug. 13, disco night on Aug. 20, and a Blues Brothers tribute closing the season Aug. 27.
Seating is open and first-come on the grass, so bring a chair or blanket. The concerts are free, no tickets needed. Alcohol isn't permitted in the park, and the Village asks that dogs stay home given the crowds and sound levels. Arlington Alfresco, the Village's pedestrian dining stretch, runs through Monday, Sept. 28, so the outdoor dining footprint outlasts the concert series by a month. The Arlington Heights Historical Museum also has a run of summer programming worth watching for, including a talk later this summer from Assistant Curator Jon Gardner on the Arlington Redwings, the town's old semi-pro baseball team.
How Does the Season Close Out?
Harmony Fest, featuring the Taste of Arlington Heights, runs Friday, Oct. 2 from 5 to 11 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 3 from 3 to 11 p.m. in Harmony Park. The Village and the Arlington Heights Chamber of Commerce program free live music alongside food and drinks from local restaurants. Guests can save seats in the park starting at 2 p.m. both days, and the Village asks people to save only the space they need and skip tents or anything that blocks sightlines.
Free parking is available at the Metra commuter lots, the underground lot on Evergreen just north of Sigwalt, and the Vail Street Garage, though the Vail Street Garage does fill up on peak nights.
